Definition & Symptoms


Male hypogonadism (MH), also known as testosterone deficiency, is defined by deficient testosterone production and impaired spermatogenesis by the testes.

MH is characterised biochemically by low circulating serum testosterone levels and clinically by a range of symptoms of testosterone deficiency.

MH has consequences for health and well-being beyond sexual function and contributes to male infertility.1
Examples Of Typical Symptoms:2
Sexual symptoms e.g. low sex drive/sexual dysfunction/low sperm count.
Cardio-metabolic symptoms e.g. Increased Body Mass Index/obesity, Metabolic syndrome
Insulin resistance, pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Physical symptoms e,g. gynaecomastia, reduced muscle mass/strength,
hot flushes/sweats, sleep disturbances, Osteoporosis/height loss/low trauma fractures.
Psychological symptoms: e.g. changes in mood, diminished cognitive function.
